PINK- Ripping off New Zealand artist Martin Emond

Has anyone seen Pinks new music video?
In her latest video she has ripped off some of the late Martin Emonds characters, cialis illness Martin Emond was an great New Zealand graphic/character artist who passed away 2 years ago.

We’re wondering just how much cash rock video production designers and stylists for are paid to come up with original ideas. You see, the latest video from American pop singer Pink borrows heavily from the work of well-known New Zealand artist Martin Emond.

The single “U + Ur Hand”, to be released in Europe at the end of August, features Pink wearing clothing and posing as several of Emond’s characters, including BabyRedKnuckles, RockerBikergirl and HardCandy.

“Seems whoever styled or created the video has obviously come across our favorite son Marty Emond’s artworks and ‘borrowed’, says Steve Hodge from New Zealand clothing label Illicit, who looks after Emond’s estate together with his family.

Illicit reproduces some of Emond’s most iconic images on hoodies, shirts and more. “As we all realised,” says Hodge, “Marty was well ahead of everyone in creating new looks and characters! At least it’s not Britney Spears.”

Emond gained notoriety for his over the top illustrations in the 1992 comic book series White Trash, written by Gordon Rennie. He also drew for UK comic 2000 AD, D.C. comics’ Lobo mini-series and he illustrated album covers for heavy metaller Glenn Danzig. He lived in Los Angeles for the last eight months of his life before committing suicide in 2004, aged 34.

Emond’s work is a knock-off of Jamie Hewlett’s early artwork just as Jarrod said.
Just Google “Tank Girl” and you’ll see for yourself.

The song itself is rip off of a song by an australian band called “The Veronicas”. The title of their song that pink ripped off from is “4ever” and the name of their debut album is “The secret life of….”. All of pink song’s remind me of some melodies that I’ve heard somewhere before… she just mixes and matches a few melodies here and there and wham we have a new song. There is a new single of her’s that just came out that mysetriously sounds like “MGMT – Electric Feel”

As an inventor of all… Semi-God or whatever I must say that I had never heard about this fellow before I saw an interview with Pink.

The tragic thing here is not any rip-off… Nor if his friends got anything out of it.

For Christ sake! The guy is dead, thats a rip-off… that is tragic and I wonder who stole his life, why did the fellow end his life? That is a rip-off…

Punky ppl are stupid… so to make em happy, dig the poor artist up and stuff his poor skeleton full of dollar bills and they would be happy!

    I vote on Pink!

I have to say I totally 100% agree with Ben here, I’m a huge Marty fan and have been following Marty’s work and this story since day 1. As for you RUDY, whining about George Bush not original, seriously?! When was the last time you heard somebody sing about something original? And ‘us true old school punks know a poser when we see one’? I don’t think I’ve ever read a post where someone has sounded anywhere near as much of a try-hard poser as you do. Also, I do hate to admit it but she does have talent. I’m not sure how much of her music you’ve heard but I was offered free tickets to a concert of hers a few years back, I jump at the chance to hear live music no matter who it is and I must say I’ve seen some terrible acts but the Pink concert was great, she’s a seriously talented singer and performer. Sorry.

No kissing, she had lindsay lohan upskirt asked her legs were smooth.

  19. Rob 05/19/2007 5:35 pm

Well, you can say whatever you want to say, but she looks damn good in her musicvideo! I never heard of these characters, not even about Martin Emond, but the moment I saw the musicvideo of ‘U + UR Hand’ for the first time, I just loved the characters. And perhaps it is easy ripping, perhaps it is because P!nk/ the team of this musicvideo loved the characters of Martin Emond, but at least be glad that the characters are used in a good way. I mean that the characters aren’t ‘raped’, aren’t mollested. Of all the things that could happen to the characters, I think that this way is not bad at all. Now more people have heard of Martin E. and his characters, than ever before! :-D

  20. Rudy 05/08/2007 5:16 am

Yeah, She’s been rippin’ off Wendy O Williams from the Plasmatics from the start too. I just heard her latest
song in which she whines about Geo. Bush – as if thats an origional bit…HA!. Pink Sux. We true old school punks know a poser when we see one. She’s a phony no talent FAT peroxide bimbo named PINK!

  21. ben 04/27/2007 8:54 am

I was a friend of Martins, heres some facts.

He didnt copy Tanino liberatore. Baby Redknuckles is Martin’s character, With a pose similar to a postcard by Liberatore. If you have two eyes you can see that martins style is only influenced by the style and Ideals Of other artists like Hewlit and Bisley and not copied at all.

Pink (I understand this to be a fact) bought a book of Martins art and handed it to the director and said make the video look like this. Martin never had any personal involvment in that video. Never got a cent from it.

I dont know what sales as a direct relation to that video would be. probably more than you or I earn in a year. Martin had roughly $36 in his bank account when he died. Do You kind of see how the little guy got roughly and impolitly fingered here?

Anyway he was always philosophical about that stuff, and he would have found a way to work it to his advantage. As Illicit will probably do. Its a good way to ask Pink to wear Martins clothes and help him that way.

  22. maria 04/10/2007 1:21 am

Pink admitted in an interview that she specifically was inspired by martin emond.

  23. Neenor 02/08/2007 10:08 am

i think it if was a homage it would be exactly the same as the art work its self if you look closely you can notice some little changes..
By changing it just enough so its not exactly the same she can and who ever designed the music video can get away with out copy right infringements.

Pink probably didn’t even know about the was probably the director. And sense Edmond’s work has very strong female characters. It was an easy fit for the director to copy these characters for pink..who is much like these characters.

As for Emond coping peoples work he was inspired, not coping directly from some ones art like it has been done here.

I personally think its sad thats they did this to such a talented artist, and thought they could go by un-noticed because hes not well known.

My guess is he probably wouldn’t be pleased by this and i know how much it hurts to get your art stolen..
So his family and friend have every right to complain.

  24. Chris M 12/31/2006 9:49 pm

The redhotchillipeppers manage to credit the inspiration in their video, but in the end its all good advertising.
Most artists would quit a job theyre sick off, the best artists kill themselves.

  26. sp 12/12/2006 2:58 pm

    * i mean shouldn’t give this guy credit…. sorry

  27. sp 12/12/2006 2:57 pm

pink isn’t the art director of the video… and i wouldn’t call this a rip-off. I don’t think anyone is deliberately trying to profit from this guy’s artwork. One of the main reasons is people dont buy music videos commercialy like that, maybe in a couple of years when the apple music store video section is more diverse..but that’s not an issue now. I would call this a homage or reference. im not saying they should give this guy credit though.

  28. CharlesGod 11/16/2006 5:27 am

I don’t think she is “gettin rich off it” as much as one would think. The song/video is not a chart topper as some of her other songs. I would like to know one thing if anyone can help. The 3 looks in the video do look alot like Martin’s drawings. But it is never stated as “hello, I’m Rockerbiker girl” or whoever. So can anything be done? Does it fall under parody? Like nice parody? And Hard Candy and P!NK Hard Candy look the most different. The only thing covering HC’s nipples are suspenders and P!NK is wearing a short cut tube top. I don’t know. I mean for example does anyone ask Lisa Marie if they can go “Thank you, thank you very much”? Their is so much pain in the world, so much hatred, greed, jelousy, fear…do we need yet another somewhat pointless lawsuit? Let’s hold a “say awnce” at the very least to find out the only opinion that in the end really matters.

  29. Anonymous 10/29/2006 8:13 am

Well, it would seem to have offended the people who run illicit sufficiently because they are taking legal action regarding this. Pink’s gettin rich off it, so at least a royalty would be in order dont you think?

  30. CharlesGod. 10/24/2006 3:02 pm

P!NK do what she do. From all the years she’s been around, you’d think you’d know. I’m sure, if asked to pay to his estate, she would. She isn’t begging for cash, as we know. Neither am I and neither is the Emond estate. No need to name call or be juvenile over it. Martin seemed like a great guy who only wanted to use his gift of art to express whatever he felt the world needed. It could be worse, it’s not Britney Spears.

  31. michelle 10/19/2006 6:20 pm

Half the scenarios in the video were inspired by the drawings of underground comic artist Emond, best known for his collaborations with metal singer Danzig. Meyers (director of the video) said Pink brought him a book of Emond’s drawings while they were brainstorming for the clip and the pair looked through them and picked out a few characters that would fit Pink’s personality.
The homage to the beloved creations of Emond — who committed suicide at age 34 in Los Angeles in 2004 — has been generating a stir on comic blogs ever since the clip first began airing in Europe earlier this summer. Meyers said the idea all along was to honor Emond’s art. “It was definitely a source of inspiration for some of the setups, and I wanted to change her outfits for each verse, so we mixed those characters in with the ones I came up with,”

  32. alex 10/03/2006 5:42 pm

meh.. if pink wanted to dress up as something a litte less subtle and walked out looking like a marvel comic book character or the mona lisa or a fucking pokemon or something nobody would have batted an eye lid. Its sad when an inspiration crosses media because there becomes a huge grey area regarding royalty and if its aplicable, and its especialy sad when something is handled with so little class as this. Its stolen, I know it, you know it, but nobody cares, nobody owns the copyright for scribbling on a punching bag and red spandex, thats rediculous. And frankly the top illustration looks a hella lot like tank girl, and Hewlett’s been ripped of with that character way more than Martin Emond ever will. This situation isnt a tee shirt design that got stolen and can constructively be brought to a solution, its no more productive than bitching about how the Ozone layer is broken.

  33. Tommo 09/30/2006 4:10 am

if it was a tribute you think they would of contacted the estate no?

just because you like someones style, doesn’t mean you can rip it off and say “oooooohhh, don’t worry, l’m a fan” it’s ok.

    yeah right.

  34. Aralyn 09/29/2006 8:31 am

Seriously, why is everyone taking offence to this? When I found out I immediatly thought that it was a tribute or something because they liked his work. And even if it was stolen I mean what’s the big deal?

I had never heard of him until I found out that her characters were based on his. I searched him and him and am now a fan. The video promoted his memory to me and I’m sure many more.

  35. Specs 09/25/2006 3:50 am

    his family wasnt contacted.
good ad for illicit who are trying to enter the states tho

  36. Woopsadaisy 09/21/2006 12:41 pm

Wooooooo there, you guys need to chilly out a wee bit! Who cares? It’s a good video, its great art work. Channel your energies into something more important. Like cleaning the car or removing your shoulder hair.
    Interesting site tho.

  37. jessica 09/19/2006 6:43 pm

dave has some valid points, jon kennedy are you twelve or just a stuck up prick?

  38. D 09/19/2006 3:34 am

    nah this is an homage.
if marty was a music video director it’d be a bite.
    but he’s not.
this is how the world works.
he did not live in a vaccuum, and im sorry to say it, his work was not all that original.
dont get me wrong, im a fan, i met the guy and liked him.
but this is just what happens, take it as a sign of respect and move on, or else instigate court proceedings & shut the ffffrk up.

  39. jon kennedy 09/17/2006 1:25 am

this is directed to the dumb fuck dave”fucks”himself

and his clueless followers if pink/her designers really did like and respected marty emonds as an artist and a person they would have taken the time to contact the ppl, marty’s friends who now have rights and made sure it was alright with them first instead of just taking it and saying this is ours jus cuz we made crosses in the eyes or made it into reality with pink but no that dosnt cut it! obiously your not designers with ppl just waiting to steal shit off ur front porch as u stand there and say well they have more money than me and well i cand defend whats mine!! and if they did pay homage to the artist or ask to use the image this article wouldnt be on this site!!!!

    think—– just think

  40. LL 09/16/2006 4:17 pm

I (sort of) agree with Dave and Velvet, although if it really is an homage I think there should be a direct (either spoken or in text) reference to the artist’s name if it’s going to be that blatant of an influence. The Chili Peppers did that a few years ago with one of their videos, just some text at the beginning that said “Inspired by the work of…”. I think without that it IS a ripoff, because the artist gets no benefit or exposure whatsoever.

  41. VelvetUnderdog 09/16/2006 10:18 am

I agree with you, DaveHimself. That was the first thought that came to my mind when I saw this one. I am surely not a fan of Pink, or the industry that pimps her, but it’s quite possibe that either the director or someone involved with the video is giving a tribute to Edmonds. Maybe even Pink is the art fan. After all, she “doesn’t want to be a stupid girl”.

  42. jarrod 09/16/2006 3:09 am

edmond’s work is a ripoff of early jamie hewlett though. so what about him?

  43. greg 09/16/2006 1:26 am

you sure it’s not in homage?

  44. DaveHimself 09/15/2006 5:56 pm

You guys are all leaping in the same direction without thinking. You all yell “the nerve!” “damn corporations!”

Did you ever stop to think that maybe Pink is a fan of the artist and has integrated his artwork into hers.

And before you decide if that integration is acceptable perhaps consider if it was acceptable when Martin Emonds painted Baby Red Knuckles A charactor created by Tanino Liberatore creator of Ranxerox.

Don’t grab a pitchfork so quickly. Think. And do a little research.

  45. Pinky 09/15/2006 3:09 pm

Refreshing to see someone stand up and point out all the corporate rip off merchants out there! Nice one.

I gotta agree with the previous post though..can you change the type colour? I had to keep highlighting it to read it.

    big up

  46. Anonymous 09/15/2006 1:19 pm

is it possible to change the color of the writings coz its really uneasy to read…..?

  47. al 09/11/2006 2:24 am

too much. who do these people think they are? rock-stars or something…
